It’s cold outside! Depending on where you live in the United States you usually need to consider winterizing. When winterizing, you prepare and or adapt something to prepare for the winter cold weather. Have you ever considered you may need to adapt your skin care routines and habits to care for your skin during the cold month of February?
Your skin will thank you if you stop using your usual powerful deep cleanser. Using a harsh cleanser, specifically a foaming cleanser, will actually make your dry skin even worse, stripping away natural oils and moisture while irritating the skin. Consider using a gentle or lotion-based cleanser.
When it’s cold outside there’s a temptation to take long hot showers to get warm. While it may feel good at the moment, this hot shower works to displace your natural hydration levels, pulling water out of the skin cells. It’s better to take a lukewarm shower and try to keep it short. A good rule of thumb is if the mirror in the bathroom is steamed up after a shower, the water is too hot. Remember, right after you get after the shower apply a high quality moisturizer to re-hydrate and lock in moisture. You have about a 5-minute window after a shower or bath when your epidermis is rapidly evaporating moisture from the surface of your skin.
Did you know that sleeping with your makeup on could lead to irritation and dryness? Makeup does not allow the skin to “breathe” properly, so keeping it on overnight is a quick way to take your skin from dry to really dry. Always properly cleanse and moisturize your skin before bed.
Dr. Ransom is available to help you choose the correct skin care routine to help you through each season of the year. This winter, take time to be informed and proactive with your skin to keep it in its best shape and to reveal your true skin’s beauty.
