As a sub-type of the skin condition called Rosacea, Rhinophyma results in a bulbous appearance of the nose, particularly along the tip. Yet, the exact cause of the condition is not fully understood. Medical News Today reports that in the past, some people believed that alcohol consumption played a role. However, there is no definite link between the two, though alcohol could exacerbate the condition by causing blood vessels to dilate. Otherwise, risk factors include having fair skin, being male, middle-aged and/or having a family history of rosacea. Even so, Dr. Evan Ransom specializes in surgical and non-surgical treatment of the nose, and is uniquely equipped to address Rhinophyma.
There’s no question that Rhinophyma can have an undesirable effect on an individual’s self-esteem, especially when cases are dramatic. As the thickened tip of the nose becomes more pronounced and red, the skin takes on a bumpy, warty look. Individuals have also noted enlarged pores, as well as scarring or pitting of the skin. Depending on the severity of the condition and a patient’s facial anatomy, however, there are several options for treatment.
Common approaches include ablative laser resurfacing using a carbon dioxide laser, cryosurgery, cold knife resection, electrocautery and/or skin grafting. No treatment method for Rhinophyma is superior to the other, because the condition is different from person to person. Moreover, to reshape a disfigured nose or to improve the overall appearance of the nose and skin, multiple techniques are often combined to produce the results that patients long for.
Aside from superficial and surgical treatment for Rhinophyma, antibiotics and systemic medications are sometimes prescribed to help reduce inflammation and redness.
